Australian Council for the Certification of the Medical Laboratory Scientific Workforce

Welcome to the ACCMLSW website

After two years of information gathering, discussion and reflection (and two to three decades of debate), the medical laboratory science profession in Australia now has its own national professional certification scheme.

Representatives from AIMS, AACB, ASM, HGSA, ASC, ANZSBT, ASCIA, FSA, THANZ, ACS, the RCPA Faculty of Science, and representatives from the histology discipline have all worked together to design a model of medical laboratory science certification for professionals, no matter their chosen discipline.

The final report from the QUPP funded project is available here.  The constitution of the ACCMLSW is available here.

The certification scheme is now open.   In recognition of the financial pressures many households are under due to the coronavirus pandemic, the normal certification fees will be discounted by 10% for the remainder of this year.

Why I became certified.

“ Certification with ACCMLSW provides formal recognition of my ongoing commitment to continuing education within my profession. Certification also signifies to my employer and peers, a continued commitment to professional development to assist in future advancement in my career.  I support the ACCMLSW certification scheme as a pathway to exemplify the commitment and professionalism of the highly skilled medical laboratory scientific workforce within Australia."

Darren Allen, Senior Scientist, Pathology Queensland.  “

"I became a Certified Medical Laboratory Scientist as soon as the opportunity arose, to become a part of a group of likeminded medical scientists committed to ongoing professional development and a passion for self-improvement. Certification is a commitment towards ensuring competent scientists are employed and retained within our profession, and gain recognition as a vital part of Australia's healthcare system. Our industry can be elevated to the status of our registered colleagues overseas through this unified certification scheme."

Raewyn French, Blood Matters, Victoria

"In our ever-changing landscape of medical science, the need to maintain quality standards through relevant knowledge and experience in medical laboratory science is vital to ensuring confidence in the results provided, especially when it impacts patient’s lives.

I have found that in all my positions in pathology, pharmaceutical as well as academic research, there is a need to constantly update ourselves with the evolving medical science and technology and align ourselves with an organisation that can provide recognition for that level of competency."
